Lions and Tigers and Bears, Oh My!

At least once a year we try to make our way into DC to visit the animals at the National Zoo. This year we made that journey when Matt was off from work and Sam had a day off from school. As the kids get older it's clear that they'll enjoy this trip more and more. We started at the kid's farm where the cows were very lively. They were mooing so loudly that Carson was clinging onto me very tightly.
Then we made our way to the big cats. The lions were also very active. They were running around and chasing one another and roaring a bit here and there.
Here Madison and Carson are enjoying a break with the monkey/orangutan statutes.
It's not my preference that my husband would take a picture of my back side and really not my preference to post it on my blog....but this was the only shot we got in the ape house. Notice the one on the right covered with it's blankie. It was so cute the way it would wrap itself up and just sit there and watch us. As we were looking at it the one on the left made it's way over to us from the far corner and was literally nose to nose with me just looking into my eyes. It must have been a male because as Matt knelt down and got close to him, he quickly turned around and put his back to Matt. He wouldn't even look at Matt. It was so funny.
The elephants were out in the yard. They weren't doing anything extraordinary, just hanging out.
The pandas don't do much either but they are so cute. I really had to zoom in to get this picture of the cute cuddly bear.
One of the highlights of the trip was seeing this orangutan go across the wires they have where they can roam freely, for the most part. He was making his way across the walkway we were on and there was quite a crowd that had gathered. A zoo worker was monitoring him as he went across and about halfway across the walkway he pooped. Fortuneately nobody was that close to being directly underneath him but you could hear the entire crowd say "OOOHH!"
The sea lions were one of our last stops of the day. It's like he actually posed for me in this picture.

The day was a success. We saw a lot of other animals too even though we don't have pictures of all of them. Madison did not like the snakes! And she was disappointed that we didn't see the giraffes...where were they?
